Biographical Information:
We are honored to welcome Denise Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson and founder of the Nicole Brown Foundation, as this year's keynote speaker. Ms. Brown is an impassioned advocate for victims of domestic violence and since her sister's tragic death as a result of domestic violence, has worked tirelessly to increase public awareness across the country and around the world. Denise made a promise to her sister Nicole that she would not die in vain. She is dedicated to making our communities safer through education and awareness, sharing programs that work, helping pass legislation, and challenging us all to stand up for what is right.
As part of her commitment to education and awareness, Denise Brown has worked to help pass an array of legislative solutions on domestic violence. One of the most important projects she took on was to lobby on behalf of the Violence Against Women Act. Ms. Brown, upon request of Senator Arlen Spector, testified to the U. S. Senate Appropriations Committee for increased funding for VAWA. After her testimony, that part of the bill's funding increased from eighteen million dollars to thirty two million dollars.
Denise comments on her work by stating, "I’ve learned two things on my continuing journey, one that I’m not alone in my loss, and two that I’m not alone in my determination to make sure that the epidemic of violence does not go unanswered. I do this in Nicole’s name."
